Activate Clay Minerals

To demonstrate the importance of shrink/swell properties in specific clay minerals, a simple demonstration is conducted during this lecture. At the beginning of the lecture, large Bentonite pellets are placed in a perforated tin pie pan elevated on rubber stoppers inside a shallow mixing pan. A student is asked to fill the mixing pan and pie pan with water to hydrate clay mineral. The change in height is monitored using a dial indicator and students watch this soil grow during the lecture period. This simple experiment will be used to demonstrate the possible effects of high swell soils beneath or beside structures.
